Accessibility
Who's Up should work for every comic, host, venue and audience member, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, magnification, captions or reduced motion. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 at level AA, the standard Ontario's Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) sets for websites.
What we do
- Every page works with a keyboard and a screen reader. Buttons, fields and controls are labelled, and you can always see where you are.
- Text and the room's own colours are checked for contrast in every theme, so a host's choice of colour can't make a page hard to read.
- Pages zoom and reflow down to a 320-pixel-wide screen without scrolling sideways.
- If your device asks for less motion, the TV, the lineup and the pages hold still.
- The TV has its own Pause (or the P key) for the slides and ticker, and Sound off (or M) for its music and video sound.
- Sign-up never needs an account, a password or a puzzle: a name is enough.
- Every show can be printed: the running order, a QR poster and a paper sign-up sheet.
What we know isn't there yet
- Crowd videos are short clips people take at the show, and they don't come with captions. They're optional, and the host chooses whether they go on the TV.
- Sign-in codes and links expire after a short time, for security. If one runs out, ask for a new one; it takes a few seconds.
Tell us, or ask for another format
If something on Who's Up is hard to use, or you'd like information in another format (large print, plain text, read over the phone), write to ryan@ryanmorris.ca. Tell us the page and what happened. We read every message, reply as soon as we can, and take every report into account when we change the site.
At the show
Who's Up runs the sign-up list and the screen; the venue and the host run the room. For step-free access, seating, or anything else about the space itself, ask the venue or the host directly.
